The porcelain of Centinela del Mar begins to provide data

In this Blog was published a note entitled “The Mystery of the porcelain of Centinela del Mar”(http://enelmardelsur.blogspot.com.ar/2011/05/el-misterio-de-las-lozas-de-centinela.html ). The note talked about of hundreds of porcelain pieces that have been appearing since decades on the Centinela del Mar shore and, in less quantity, on the Mar del Sud shore. The patterns of the pieces were curious and the work on the porcelain was amazing. A lot of theories and stories about the origin and antiquity of them were told along the years. This Blog, helped by expert in porcelain from others countries, could solved part of the mystery that surround these pieces since years.

The porcelain of Centinela del Mar that is being found since decades.

The origin of the porcelain

During the work of cataloguing and photography that Laureano Clavero (author of this Blog) is doing on Carlos Canelo’s collection, appeared part of the base of a cup found in Centinela del Mar that had what seemed to be a trademark. This trademark said: Copeland & Garret. Late Spode. Also in the lower part of the trademark appeared the details of two laurel plants that follow the words. The investigations on the porcelain started to find a path.

Trademark found in one of the pieces that gives a lot of information about the misterious porcelain.

The trademark of one of the oldest English porcelain factories

The trademark was belong to the mythic porcelain factory Spode founded in 1770 in Stoke-on-Trent, England, where today exist the museum of the old factory. Spode was founded by the young Josiah Spode (1733-1797). Mr. Spode improves a Chinese porcelain formula in order to sell tableware all around England and the rest of the world. The formula last during years and today the pieces are still being made by Portmeirion Group’s factory.

How these pieces arrived to Centinela del Mar and Mar del Sud?

One of the most difficult points to solve in this investigation is to know from where these pieces come from. Obviously has to be a shipwreck occurred between Mar del Sud and Centinela del Mar. The quantity of porcelain found indicates that the shipwreck must be near to Centinela del Mar. The trademark indicates that these pieces were made between 1833 and 1847. Therefore there is the possibility that the ship could be from that time. Neighbors from Centinela del Mar have informed about pieces of wood and old nails found on the shore that could be belong to the ship that transported the porcelains.

This Blog helped by some English institutions is trying to find the documentation about the shipwreck and the lost of the Spode porcelain in the South Atlantic. By the moment part of the mystery is solved but a lot of questions don’t have answer yet.
